What they sell is a catalogue: around seventy different stories, personalised mainly by name, character and dedication. Memolio sells the opposite: one product, generated fresh every time, about one real person's actual life. If you're weighing the two, you're really choosing between range and depth.

If you're buying for a child, Wonderbly is usually the right answer and we'd say so to anyone who asked. The illustration is beautiful, the writing is properly edited, they have a title for almost every occasion and age, and their German editions are real localisations rather than machine translation. Eleven million books is not an accident.

We make one book, for one purpose. We are not a children's book publisher and we have no catalogue to browse.

What "personalised" means in each case

This is the distinction worth being clear about. Wonderbly's personalisation is real but it sits at the level of name, character and dedication. The adventure your grandfather goes on in the book is one someone wrote in advance. Change the name and the same book belongs to somebody else.

A Memolio book cannot be given to anybody else. The pages are about the town he grew up in, the trade he learned, the woman he married, the boat he kept fixing. Those come from what you tell us in about 30 minutes of questions, and if the details were wrong the book would be worthless.

Neither approach is dishonest. They just answer different briefs. "A lovely gift with their name in it" and "a record of who this person actually was" are not the same request.

Photographs are the other big difference

Wonderbly doesn't need photos. You choose or enter a character and the artwork adapts.

Memolio needs them, because the whole point is that the man in the illustrations looks like your grandfather. A vision model learns his face from the photographs you upload, and every page is painted with that likeness. You then check every page and can regenerate any of them, up to 50 times, free, before anything is printed.
