Watercolour illustration of a grandfather reading with a grandchild

Memolio vs Hooray Heroes

One customises who's in the story. The other writes a different story entirely.

Hooray Heroes has sold millions of personalised books, and they're good at what they do: you build a cartoon character that looks like the recipient, human illustrators have drawn the artwork, and it ships in a few days. The story, though, is the same story in every copy. Memolio works the other way round. The story is the one thing that changes: it's built from your grandparent's actual childhood, work and family, and the illustrations are painted by AI to match. Which you want depends on whether you're buying a fun keepsake or a record of a real life.

TL;DR

  • Hooray Heroes personalises the character. The narrative is the same in every copy of a title.
  • Memolio personalises the story. Every book is written from one real person's life.
  • Hooray Heroes from $46.99, and they advertise shipping in about 3 days. Memolio €45, about two weeks end to end.
  • Hooray Heroes uses human illustrators and says so proudly. Memolio's pages are painted by AI, and we say so too.
  • If you want it fast and fun, they're a strong choice. If you want their real story, that's us.

What Hooray Heroes does well

Credit where it's due. Their illustration is drawn by people, and they've made that a point of principle rather than hiding it. The character builder is genuinely satisfying: you pick hair, skin tone, glasses, freckles, and you can see the recipient in it before you pay. They ship fast. Millions of families have bought one and liked it.

If you need a present by Friday, we cannot compete with that, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Memolio takes about two weeks, most of which is printing and shipping a hardcover.

The thing to understand before you buy either

In a Hooray Heroes book, your grandmother appears as a character in a story that was written before anyone knew she existed. She looks like herself. What happens to her in the book happened to every other grandmother who bought that title.

In a Memolio book, the story is hers. The village she grew up in, the job she did for thirty years, the dog, the move, the thing she still talks about at Christmas. You supply those in about 30 minutes of questions and they become the pages.

Neither is better in the abstract. A five-year-old may well prefer a bright, funny book where Granny fights a dragon. A seventy-five-year-old opening a book about her own childhood tends to react differently. Know which reaction you're buying.

Human illustration versus AI illustration

Hooray Heroes markets itself as explicitly AI-free. That's a real position and some buyers will choose them for it alone, which is fair enough.

Memolio uses AI to paint every page, and it's the only way the product can exist: a human illustrator painting 24 bespoke watercolours of one specific person's life would cost far more than €45 and take months. What you get in return for the AI is that the pictures are of them — a vision model learns the face from your photographs, so the woman on page nine is recognisably your grandmother, not a customised avatar.

You review every page before printing and get up to 50 free regenerations if something's off. Nothing prints until you approve it.

Choose Hooray Heroes if…

You need it this week. You want hand-drawn artwork by human illustrators. The book is mainly for a young child to enjoy. You'd rather no AI was involved at all. You don't have good photographs to work from.

Choose Memolio if…

You want a book about the grandparent's actual life, not a template with their name in it. You have some family photos. You have about two weeks. The gift is for the grandparent as much as for the grandchildren.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Memolio and Hooray Heroes?

Hooray Heroes personalises the character: you customise how the hero looks, and the narrative is the same in every copy of that title. Memolio personalises the story itself, writing it from the real memories, photographs and life events you supply, so no two books are the same.

Is Hooray Heroes AI-generated?

No. Hooray Heroes states that its pages are created by human artists and markets itself as AI-free. Memolio does use AI: a language model writes the story from your answers, and an image model paints the illustrations from your photos. We think the trade-off is worth it, but if you want no AI involved, Hooray Heroes is the better fit.

Which is faster?

Hooray Heroes. They advertise shipping in about 3 days. Memolio takes about two weeks end to end, because the book is written and illustrated from scratch before it is printed.

Which is cheaper?

They are close. Hooray Heroes starts at $46.99. Memolio is €45 including VAT plus shipping (DE €4.99 · AT €9.99 · GB £5.99).

Do I need photos for Memolio?

Yes. The illustrations are painted from real photographs so the faces look like the actual people. Hooray Heroes does not need photos, because you build the character from a set of options instead.

Can grandchildren appear in a Memolio book?

Yes. The grandchildren can appear in the illustrations alongside their grandparent, painted from photographs you upload.
