Approving your characters

Checked on 6 October 2026

How do I approve my characters, and why won't it let me send?

After you order, the step “Meet your characters” shows everyone who will be in the book as a painted portrait. In a How We Met book this step is called “Your characters”. Check each face and approve it on its card. Nothing else is painted or printed until you approve them. Your answers can only be sent once every portrait is approved. You approve them right here on the page, so there is no email to wait for.

The free first look shows only the person the book is about, as they are today. In a How We Met book it shows the two of you today. The younger years and everyone else follow after you order.

These portraits are there so you can check the faces: face shape, hair, glasses and skin tone. On the pages of the book everyone appears in full painted scenes, with their own clothes and expressions. So judge the face, and approve it if it is them.

Steps

  1. Wait until every card shows a portrait. Cards that are not ready yet say they are still painting, and the page updates by itself.
  2. Look closely at each face. If one is not right, use “Adjust this portrait” or “Use a different photo” on that card before you approve it.
  3. On each card, tap or click “Yes, that’s …” with their name, or “Yes, that’s them”. The button changes to “Approved ✓”. In a How We Met book each of you has two looks on one card: tap or click “Today” and “When you met” and approve each look.
  4. Approved one by mistake? Tap or click “Approved ✓” again to undo it. After a repaint, or if you pick another version, approve that card again.
  5. When every card is approved, go on to the last step and send your answers. If sending brings you back here, the highlighted card still needs your approval.

If every card shows “Approved ✓” and sending still brings you back here after you reload the page, write to us at hello@memolio.io and tell us what you see.
