Search for an AI book gift and you'll find products that have almost nothing in common with each other, all using the same words. One is a template with a name swapped in. One is invented fiction starring the recipient. One is a real person's actual life, written and illustrated from what you know about them. They cost similar amounts and produce completely different objects, so the first job is working out which one you're looking at. This guide covers that, how the technology works underneath, and the specific things that go wrong.

The three things called "an AI book"

1. Name-swap template books

The oldest category, and mostly not AI at all. A professionally written and illustrated story exists already, and your details are inserted into fixed slots: the name, sometimes the hair colour, sometimes a dedication page. Every copy is otherwise identical.

These are well made, because a human illustrator drew them once and drew them properly. They're a good fit for small children, who like seeing their name in a book and don't mind that the plot is a dragon quest. They're a poor fit as a gift about an adult's life, because the story isn't about that adult in any real sense.

2. AI-written fiction starring the recipient

Here a language model invents a story and an image model illustrates it. You give some inputs, and out comes an adventure where the recipient is the hero. The story is genuinely new each time.

The failure mode is blandness. Given thin input, a model will produce competent, warm, entirely generic prose. It reads pleasantly and says nothing specific. If you've ever read an AI-written birthday message and felt it could have been for anyone, that's the same effect at book length.

3. Books built from a real life

The story comes from actual events you supply. Where they grew up, the job, how they met their partner, the thing the grandchildren always ask about. The AI writes and illustrates, but it isn't inventing the material, it's shaping what you gave it.

How the technology actually works

Worth understanding, because it explains what can and can't go wrong.

There are usually two separate systems. A language model takes your answers and writes the text. A separate image model paints the pictures. They don't share a brain. The image model can't read the story and reason about it; it gets a written instruction for each page and paints that.

For a real person to appear consistently, something has to bridge the gap. In Memolio's case a vision model looks at the photographs you upload and builds a reference for that person's face, which then gets passed to the image model on every page. Services that skip the vision step are describing your grandfather in words to an image model and hoping, which is why some AI books come back with a plausible stranger on every page.

This also explains the most common visible fault. Because each page is painted separately, faces can drift between pages. Good services handle it with reference images and a review step. There is no way to eliminate it entirely, so what matters is whether you can fix it when it happens.

What goes wrong

• Face drift. The person looks slightly different on page 4 than page 11. Fixable with regeneration, but only if the service lets you regenerate.
• Generic story. Almost always caused by thin answers at the input stage. "He was a hard worker" produces nothing. "He drove the same delivery route for 31 years and knew every dog on it" produces a page.
• Wrong ages. Depicting someone at twenty when the scene is from their fifties, or the reverse. Ask whether the service handles time periods deliberately.
• Text in illustrations. Image models are still unreliable at rendering words inside a picture. A shop sign in the background may come out as nonsense.
• Uncanny expressions. Occasional and unpredictable. Another argument for being able to redo a page.
• No way to intervene. The worst one. If the book prints straight from generation with no review, you find out what you bought when it arrives.

How to judge one before buying

Five questions that separate the good from the disappointing.

1. Do you use my photographs for the face? If the answer is no, you will not get a likeness. Ask the reverse too: whose photo is actually required. With Memolio the only one needed is of the person the book is about; everyone else, grandchildren included, can be described in words instead.
2. Can I see every page before it prints? If there's no review step, you're buying blind.
3. How many changes do I get, and do they cost extra? Some services charge per regeneration, which changes the real price.
